(I was somewhat distracted by the games of Dungeon Fighter and forgot to do my usual tour of the room to see what everyone was playing. I have some of it down but I know I missed whatever was being played on the two tables by the kitchen. Anyone know?)

Next week (2nd May) we will be holding the FGC's annual general meeting. This means that attendance will be free, however gaming will start a little late as we discuss anything that needs discussing and elect the new committee. If you wish to be a member next year then membership fees will also be due. If there is anything you'd like to appear on the AGM's agenda then please either post a reply to this news item or send me a private message.

Unfortunately this event ended up clashing with the monthly games club at Leisure Games but you'll be pleased to hear they had a successful day anyway with many games of Netrunner being played. We'll try to avoid the clash in future.
The next Sunday event will be held on the 2nd of June.

There will be a Sunday afternoon/evening gaming session at the club this month; the 21st of April. Usual place, 2pm to 10pm. Time to dust off those long games or setup a one-shot RPG campaign. At some point during the early evening we'll organise a pizza order, but feel free to make your own food arrangements. The bar will be open as usual for drinks.

Leisure Games are holding a few events over this coming weekend which might be of interest:
- Saturday is International Tabletop Day, organised by the web show Tabletop. They are encouraging people to hold events on this particular day to promote the hobby. Leisure Games are holding an event - there will be special guests (including the legend that is James Wallis), games and freebies. Things kick-off at around 10am.
- Sunday is the monthly Leisure Games Club. Organised events this month are Eclipse and the Star Wars LCG, but feel free to turn up with whatever you want to play. I also believe Phil has a Savage Worlds one-shot ready to run. The shop is open from 11am to 5pm - but if we bribe Kara with enough chocolate I'm sure that's negotiable.

Congratulations to
Simon and Karen on the birth of their daughter this Saturday evening.

Just a reminder that this coming Sunday (27th) is the
monthly gaming club at Leisure Games.
Format is pretty much the same as FGC - turn up, play some games. There will be a session of the new
Star Wars RPG, Edge of the Empire, being run - get in touch with Mike at the shop if you want to reserve a spot. There is an assortment of demo copies of board games you are welcome to use. And, of course, feel free to bring anything of your own along. The shop will be open for purchases. 11am to 5pm. Hope to see some of you there.

This coming Thursday (20th December) is our annual silly games night. Attendance is free and there will be an evening of party games, kids games and mince pies.
The following Thursday (27th) there is no club meeting.
Club restarts on the 3rd of January. For role-players there is currently WFRP and Dragonlance scheduled, but based on recent numbers I suspect someone will need to step up and start a third game.

Just a reminder that this weekend Leisure Games are organising a Fiasco Picnic in Regents Park. From midday-ish we'll be lounging in the sun, eating, and playing the very fine GM-less roleplaying game Fiasco. In the event of rain (and indeed later on when the park gets too cold) we'll be retiring to a nearby pub.
No need to have played before, very easy to teach as the game progresses. Takes around 3 hours (depending on players) so feel free to come along even if you have to leave early.
There is a Facebook event set up: https://www.facebook.com/events/408867965815136/
If you contact the shop they'll be able to give you more info. Sean is organising it but anyone else there will know what's going on.
Alternatively just grab me on Thursday.

Just a reminder that it is the club's AGM this week.
For those who don't know, this is where we elect the committee and discuss anything that needs discussing. Don't worry, it rarely runs beyond about 15 minutes. It's more a formality than anything else. Normal gaming happens afterwards.
It does mean that attendance at club is free this week, but also that memberships expire. Current membership fee is £10 (although it's possible the club will vote to put it up)

17th November 2011 to 8th Devember 2011: Normal club weeks. So that's one last block for the roleplayers, and a pile of new Essen releases to get through for the boardgamers.
-
15th December 2011: Silly Games Night (a.k.a. FGC's Christmas Party) - an excuse to play the more unusual or childish games we own and eat far too much cake. Attendance is FREE this evening.
-
22nd Devember 2011: For a change the hall is free on the Thursday before Christmas; so this will be a regular club night. We're not being charged for the hall so attendance will also be FREE. I wouldn't expect too many people though given how near to Christmas it is.
-
29th December 2011: No club this week. Annoy your families instead.
-
5th January 2011: First club of the new year. For the roleplayers there is a one-week showcase event, take a look in the forums for more details.

As a club we have been invited to demo games at
Leisure Games on 3rd September.
So as to make it easier, I propose that we block the day into hourly time slots. In this way people can turn up whenever they want, for a set period and then do the other things they need to do on a Saturday.
If we get multiple people for a slot, we can organise a game for that slot. Not forgetting that the idea is to play games AND get people participating AND generate interest in the FGC AND sell some games for the shop.
If you want to turn up, please add your name in the format:
09:00-11:00: Ian Pearson.
I’ll collate the names to a complete list every now and then.
So to start:
09:00-11:00: Ian Pearson
16:00-17:00: Ian Pearson

This week included the 2011 AGM. Membership and attendance fees stayed the same. The committee was changed slightly, with Dylan's retirement and the addition of Phil Vigus. There was some talk of running some manner of event. Little was decided.
Once all that nonsense was out of the way, we played:

Instead of endless (but fun) games of QuackShot, how about this for an idea.
We hold a mini tournament of games such as QuackShot (how could we NOT include it), Rebound, Crossfire , table Air Hockey (if I can find a 2nd hand table), i.e. all the old (quicker) classic action games.
Everyone would play each game at least once, with points awarded for 1st place downward (i.e. in a 3 player game the winner gets 3 points, the loser 1). These would then be totalled to give the finalists who would play two of the games drawn at random to decide the overall winner. (Ties being decided by number of 1st places etc).
I also think we should give the Chocolate Poker a rest this year. I enjoy it, but it’s WAY too much to eat if you win and it does take up a great deal of the evening for the players.
So what I need from you quickly, is a list of likely games so I can source them from eBay and the like. What would be even better is if you actually have copies of said games you would be willing to donate for the evening (and possibly beforehand to ensure all the components work – see below).
I’m asking now because it may take some time to find WORKING copies of the games we decide upon. For example, I remember Rebound had rubber bands that eventually perished and the ball bearing mechanism of CrossFire used bent plastic to provide power which would eventually become soft.
I hope this has whetted your imaginations, so let me have some feedback please.
The games I have in mind so far:
QuickShot
Rebound
CrossFire
Escudo (possibly)

Live Action Role-Playing (LARP)
A few people in the club have asked about live action role-playing, so I thought I’d put some information here to tell you a bit more about it.
The system we play has its web-site here:
www.curiouspastimes.co.uk where you can find an event guide and a rules download. Curious Pastimes (or CP) runs 4 big events a year. Each has between 600 and 1000 people playing. The players are divided into 8 factions, each with their own theme. (The Lions of Albion are mostly knights, the Wolves of Norsca are Viking-types etc). These factions have rivalries and tensions between each other but are generally on the same side when fighting whatever baddies are troubling the world.
There is as much or as little role-playing as you are comfortable with. You can play someone who is largely ‘you’ and wait around on your faction’s gate until something nasty comes along to hit. You can go out and find out about the rich background of the world by talking to people, you can trade, forage, steal, guard, be a diplomat, be a scholar, try and find out how to summon demons. – whatever takes your fancy. Its also easy to find a bunch of like minded people to join up with. You don’t have to be a combat-oriented character, but sooner or later combat will come to you.
The way it works is that each faction takes it in turns to supply people to the referees, who become monsters or npc’s to interact with the rest of the players. There is also a permanent monster crew. When there is a big battle, half the factions become monsters and the other factions play their characters. (there’s another battle on the next day so you can swap roles)
Combat is with realistic looking latex/foam weapons and is both exciting and safe. Magic also plays a big part and is cast by ripping of spell cards and vocally indicating you are casting a spell. E.g. “By the power of the elements I use air as my weapon and strike you (indicate target) down!” - Target then falls on the floor for a couple of seconds and your friends beat him into next week :P
As well as the big CP events, each faction runs one or more events in the off season. These can be banquets, parliaments, quests and suchlike. They have fewer people 30-50 usually, 100+ for a big one. They are quite nice for introducing your character and making friends and contacts when it’s not too busy.
Most people camp at the events – so you will need a tent to sleep in. The faction camps are collections of large tents and marquees – so if it’s cold or rainy you can still roleplay. You can bring/make your own food or buy it hot from vendors. There is an excellently run and very popular in-character bar at every event.
There’s usually clothes/weapons to lend to you if you fancy trying it out. You also need a character idea to start with, like – ‘a human scout’ or ‘an elven magic user’ or ‘a soldier’. (Don’t be too ambitious and be the ‘lost half-dragon son of a doomed prince with a secret destiny’. ) Other than that you need a free weekend, some enthusiasm and some cash!
We are always looking for new recruits, and anyone interested feel free to post questions or talk to me.
Dave

This week will be the FGC annual general meeting. As usual this will be kept as short as possible. The basic structure will be reports from the existing committee members, followed by the election of a new committee, and then finally any other topics members wish to bring up.
The meeting lasts at most 15 minutes. Feel free to set up and start gaming as usual, however be prepared to stop and pay attention for the duration.

As there is no victor ludorum at Baycon this year, Finchley Games Club have decided to run a small tournament.
This event is designed to test teams of four players across a range of board game skills. The games will test each player in planning, accounting, strategy, psychology and brinkmanship.
GAMES
Puerto Rico
PowerGrid
Ra
Hare and Tortoise
RULES
Each player will play each game once, facing three players from other teams, determined by the referee.
The start position for each game will be determined randomly by the players.
Points will be awarded as follows:
1st place = 5 points, 2nd place =3 points, 3rd place = 2 points, 4th place = 1 point
In the event a player cannot be found, at the referees discretion, the game will be started and the absent player will be awarded 0 points.
All the points from all the players will be added together to form a team score, which will be posted from the end of the second round.
Results should be entered into the score sheet provided.
All the games in one round will be completed before the second round is played.
After the final round is played, the winning team will be the one with the most points. If there is a tie, victory will go to the team who scored the most 1st places, then second places etc. In the unlikely event of everything being equal, a playoff game will be played, chosen at random from the list of four games.
TIMING
In an informal event like Baycon it is up to the individual players to organise each game amongst themselves. However, in order to be fair to everyone else, please ensure that the first and second round games are completed by the time the referee has had his breakfast on Saturday morning.
GET INVOLVED
Team signup sheets will be available at Baycon. Feel free to comment on this story, or in the forum if you need to find more players for your team.

It has been suggested that the FGC sponsor a tournament at Baycon this year.
The format will be a 'SWISS like' event, based on four classic games; possibly one from each of the last four decades.
What I need to know from you is:
1.) Do we do it ?
2.) What should the winner get ? (Note that we don't have enough money to provide real gold medals)
3.) What games would you choose ? (Between 1-2.5 hours in length, with four people a game).
REMEMBER: Baycon starts on the 8th April and I'm sure the event organisers would like some notice.

It's AGM time again - membership will be due and
the usual a shiny new committee will be
appointed by the incumbent administration elected.
If you have anything you want to raise, speak to Greg, our dedicated and hard-working secretary and have it added to the agenda.

Quack Shot
There will be only three rounds this year and anyone not registered to take part by 8, will not get a go. (Tears and tantrums after this time will get you nowhere, but WILL be funny)
Chocolate Poker
Everyone seems to like this idea, so it will go ahead as usual.
Lets try this year to bring (and play) the silly games in your collection. This was the original idea (as well as a fancy dress - which was quickly dropped).

FGC were represented at the popular Manorcon XXVI tournament held in glorious weather at Leicester University, July 25th-28th. FGC member
Mark Ashfield survived the white heat of the Games Hall to win the Manorcon Puerto Rico tournament trophy.
A couple of hundred gamers were present, particularly on Saturday. Gamers well deserved reputation for good taste in beer was proven by the 9th (& final) barrel of real ale running out on Saturday night. That left the scrumpy; some people's play suffered on Sunday as a result.
Mark was delighted to pick up a mint copy of Memoir 44 for 20 in the secondhand games sale, one of a hundred plus bargains. Hopefully FGC will have more representatives next year - there are more trophies available!
